A gripping drama that chronicles a very tough winter in Northern Ontario for nine-year-old Anne, her parents and siblings. When her father, Roger, develops a tumour on his neck and can no longer tend the trapline, Anne takes on more responsibility and checks the traps herself. Eventually Roger recovers and burns the tumour so that its terrible effects will never again be visited on the family.
