This protest film follows the paths of Québécois in their daily lives, capturing their aspirations, recording their problems and presenting the image of their own condition for them to observe. There are three main characters: symbolic figures who, in a sense, externalize three choices facing Quebecers. Only one of them refuses to surrender to the consumer society that threatens to engulf him. He seeks only to be loyal to himself and, at the end of the film, tries to pull his companions back from the oppressive existence into which they have been drawn. The director employed hard-hitting film language including subtitles and intertitles, quotations, offscreen voices and songs, references to advertising, recitative delivery in a monastic style, and an entire array of sounds and noises that were deafening the province and indeed the entire world at the time. A film of questionings, a key step in the very personal oeuvre of Gilles Groulx, and very much characteristic of a certain tradition at the NFB's French Studio. Released in 1970.
