"The majority of police officer calls involve mental health experiences. Currently, there is a lot of controversy surrounding how police handle these calls and how police personnel treat individuals experiencing mental health. Police personnel often lack knowledge surrounding mental health, and, similarly, they are often inadequately trained to respond to mental health calls. The editors' aim in putting together this textbook is to provide police studies students as well as policing professionals with practical knowledge to help guide their decision-making on critical and non-critical responses. A wide range of topics in the area of mental health disorders and police personnel response will be explored. The first section of the book defines and explains common disorders using the DSM-V criteria and the last two sections of the book discuss police interaction with people experiencing mental health and how to respond to abnormal behavior in a crisis situation"
