This course teaches the actual heat treating process covering the fundamental metallurgical knowledge of what happens when metals are heated and cooled. Focuses on: iron-cementite diagrams, introduction to structure of metals, amount of carbon present in steel, austenite formation, quenching media, hardness ranges, bath and annealing temperatures, effects of carbon on impact, microstructures, decarburization, tempering, and residual stresses.
