Over 24 million people - roughly 80% of Canada's population - live in urban areas with populations over 10,000. Their health is linked to a wide range of social, cultural, physical and economic factors, including housing, income and education level. This document reports on relationships between local urban environments and health in five of Canada's major cities, Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto Montreal and Halifax. It shows that differences exist in health levels among different neighbourhoods even in the same city as well as between different cities. It reviews the latest research, presents new analyses and explores relevant policies and programs.
