Unit I. This video illustrates that there are four major factors that impact the lives of those with a hearing loss: age of onset, degree of hearing loss, type of hearing loss, cause (etiology) of hearing losss. It visually and graphically outlines pertinent information regarding audiology. Audiograms are defined and discussed in detail in regard to the five individuals profiled. Unit II. Hearing loss may prevent a child from learning appropriate language solely by means of hearing, but hearing loss does not prevent the learning of language in concrete, visual ways. Given early detection, exposure to visual language, appropriate language modes, and a rich linguistic environment, prelinqually deafened children show the same range of cognitive ability and intellictual and conceptual growth as hearing children. This is also true of those aspects of their social and emotional development which are dependent on language acquisistion and good communication skills.
