This tape explores how misconceptions concerning a hearing loss can breed low expections and how, over time, deaf and hard of hearing persons have been denied basic rights like equal access to education, equal access to information or equal access to employment. It also stresses that family support, acceptance and encouragement are key factors which further impact on the intellectual, social and emotional development of the child with significant hearing loss. By focusing on the abilities of the individual rather than the disability, parents, caregivers, teachers and peers are shaping a strong, positive self-concept.
